Beating out NBA MVP LeBron James, former Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps was named the Associated Press Male Athlete of the Year for his second time. Phelps captured 40 votes by US editors and broadcasters, three more than the runner-up LeBron James. Phelps retired from swimming this past summer after winning the most gold and overall medals than any other Olympian. Phelps now spends his time out of the pool playing golf:
”Obviously, it’s a big accomplishment,” Phelps said. ”There’s so many amazing male athletes all over the world and all over our country. To be able to win this is something that just sort of tops off my career.”
”His contribution to the way the world thinks about swimming is so powerful,” [Phelps's former coach] Bob Bowman said. ”I don’t think any other athlete has transformed his sport the way he’s transformed swimming.”
